Favourite Place: Arlington House

JON SPENCER, TRANSIT COLLECTIVE

“Arlington House is the imposing brutalist tower block which greets you whether you arrive in Margate by rail or by road. It is a monument to the Utopianism of the 1960s, built in shining white with every one of the 142 flats looking over Margate Sands and featuring all mod cons. The white mica concrete is now a dull grey and the 52 shops, the pub, supermarket and petrol station which formed part of the development are now derelict. Even after years of neglect the building still echoes a once gleaming future.”
