Turner Contemporary Late Night Live: Turner Prize 2019

Visit Turner Contemporary after hours and experience Turner Prize 2019 alongside a mix of film screenings, live music, performance and creative workshops.

Over the course of the exhibition, Turner Contemporary are hosting artist discussions featuring the nominees from this year’s Turner Prize and four Late Night Live events which will explore themes from this year’s exhibitions.

Expect an eclectic mix of performance, film screenings, live music, artist talks with locally-sourced food and drink from our Café.

MUSIC

DJ BERNADETTE HAWKES

As a recent sitter for Barbara Walker’s new installation here at Turner Contemporary, Bernadette Hawkes will be playing music that inspires her life and work in Thanet plus tracks from each of the other sitters of Place, Space and Who.

Various life events have brought me to Thanet. What an interesting journey I have had. Guyana (formerly British Guiana) London and now Thanet. I spent most of my life in London. I have always loved music and am now realising a dream to share my passion locally and worldwide via my radio show The Happening. I am glad to part of a community that is re-inventing itself in much the way I have done in my own life.

Witness Tai Shani’s Turner Prize nominated installation, DC: Semiramis, activated with live performance throughout the evening.

DC: Semiramis is an epic and episodic project that has come to define the last five years of Shani’s practice. A series of works with interlinked stories and mythologies, DC envisions a world neither completely divorced from our own, nor tied to our own history, or our future.

BBC ARTS TAKEOVER:

Panel Discussion 19:00 – 20:00

A panel discussion will kick-start the evening. Then discover a series of films made by BBC’s New Creatives, including films made by artists and creatives from Kent. Engage with the panel who will break up the films with discussions. Discover how to get commissioned, become the next New Creative and get your work featured on the BBC’s innovative platform.

Jo Nolan – Managing Director, Screen South

The Work:

Manmade, by Isabel Palma – Isabel is a British-Spanish writer, director and artist with a background in fine art. Her short film uses dance to follow a young woman haunted by her inner demons as she tries to find a way out.

When The Tides Went Down, by Jordan Buckner – Jordan is an artist and animator. His piece is a short animation exploring our different responses to climate change, asking how we come to terms with the end of our existence when facing such a grave threat.

Essex’s Costal Arcades – Through a series of binaural recordings, interviews and musical composition – sound artist Frazer Merrick explores the infectious energy of Walton Pier and uncovers its hidden sounds, including those of the people, the place and even electromagnetic fields produced by the machines.

Talent development scheme New Creatives will, over two years, give 500 artists aged 16-30 the chance to develop their technical and creative skills and the opportunity to have their New Creatives commissions broadcast on BBC platforms.

The pieces commissioned in this first tranche include drama, animation, spoken work, soundscapes and dance, with topics ranging from immigration to mental health, explorations of gender, climate change, artificial intelligence, grief and love. New Creatives aims to give opportunities to emerging artists from backgrounds that are currently underrepresented in the arts and broadcasting, offering a unique platform for young, emerging artists to tell the stories they want to tell, bringing them to BBC audiences across BBC TV, radio and online.

New Creatives is a key component of the BBC’s wider initiative BBC Introducing Arts, with includes schemes in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. New Creatives is co-funded by BBC Arts and Arts Council England.

Spirit Compass: Where there is movement there is change – Foyle Rooms, Drop-in

As we all buckle under the weight of the collapsing system, can we slip through the cracks and re-integrate, repurpose and reorganise in order to be more-than-human?

Spirit Compass is a live dance installation, an island and a temple of sorts which you are invited to inhabit and watch the movement go by.

Premiering at BALTIC before touring the UK, this new commission responds to the increasing crisis and complexity of the 21st century. It searches for a remedy or an antidote to the over-complicated, never-ending bureaucracy, and the sedentary environments and technologies that are submerging us.

We’ll be joined by Radio Presenter and local resident, Gemma Cairney, to celebrate an evening of music and contemporary art, with playlists curated by this year’s Turner Prize artists.

WORKSHOPS

The Dream Bureau, Athelstan Sound – Foyle Rooms, 20:00 – 22:00

Athelstan Sound present The Dream Bureau. Using objects and drawings visitors can create graphic scores to be projected onto the walls of the Foyle Rooms. The scores will be interpreted and performed live both by members of Athelstan Sound and visitors themselves.

Open to all and no musical skill is necessary!

Athelstan Sound was founded in 2015 and has convened thirty events over the past four years in Margate. The group is convened by artist Dan Scott and workshops are led by local musicians, artists, dancers and attended by sound and musician practitioners as well as people for whom Athelstan Sound was there first experience with the sound arts.

LIFT-ING CONVERSATIONS: PHILOSOPHICAL INQUIRY IN THE LIFT

Join Turner Contemporary’s resident practical philosopher as they host philosophical conversations, journeying between ideas found in Turner Prize 2019, as you move between the floors of the gallery.

Helen Cammock uses text, photography and video to explore the voices of marginalized people in history. Try your own hand at Craftivism at our drop in placard-making workshop.

SOUND – Sammy Clarke (Arts Cool, Elsewhere)

Co-founder of Margate music venue, Elsewhere, Sammy Clarke aka Art’s Cool started organising live music events in Margate 7 years ago for an audience that at the time could barely fill up a living room let alone a music venue. Fast Forward a few years and the Margate’s music scene has gone from strength to strength.

Always at the heart of who and what makes the musical ecology in Margate tick, Sammy will be curating and DJing a playlist made up of all of the Margate bands and musicians that Sammy has come across over the years of organising and promoting shows out of damp smelly basements, bowling alleys, living rooms, art theatres, venues and major entertainment complexes.

Yuri Suzuki , The Welcome Chorus

Experience a live rendition of Yuri Suzuki’s ‘The Welcome Chorus’. Margate’s Social Singing Choir will perform extracts from an evolving composition by Suzuki generated using artificial intelligence. Re-arranged for human voice by Hughie Gavin the performance will occur every 30 minutes throughout the evening
